Definition and explanation of CPAP

CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. CPAP is an effective treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea, snoring and other sleep disorders. CPAP therapy takes place during sleep. Patients wear a face mask connected to a pump (commonly refered to as CPAP or CPAP Machine) that forces air into the nasal passages at pressures high enough to overcome any obstructions in the airway and stimulate normal breathing. The pressure delivered into the upper airway is continuous during both inspiration and expiration.
